Senoi Sound Archive volume 1: The Astral Academy

The Senoi Sound Archive is a collaborative project designed to reify a residue of the musical artefacts deposited by our dream life. For many years, in some London of the Imagination, to both my pleasure and frustration, I have had recurring dreams that involved chancing upon a rare and exotic recording. Usually this would be in the paraphenalia soaked market place of a midnight Camden . Invariably the record would promise: an impossible soundtrack to the sleaziest Italian cannibal movie ; a quasi-anthropological study of ceremonial dances, sacred and profane; a gothic masterpiece carved from the very alabaster of sadness; the ultimate archive of sonic and teutonic misanthropy. Always would I wake frustrated with just that residual psychic momento.

A visit to the artist, Jim Shaw's "Dreamt of Drawings" exhibition seemed to realise a desire that had been fermenting in these recurring vignettes of thwarted retail therapy... So it seemed a natural progression to open the Senoi Sound Archive. Our mission is to retrieve these fabled field recordings of temporal lobes, to decipher that necronomonic discography and stock the astral shelves of our askahic record store.

The project will work as follows: You, as the dreamer, may send, as detailed as possible transcription of any dream that involved:

discovery of an imaginary musical recording. Details where possible should include artists names, song titles, cover art, the context in which you discovered the recording and events in the dream ensuing the discovery. You can provide accompanying artwork. If the music was heard, then include details of the musical style (referencing "real" artists if necesssary) and the emotional or physical effect of the music.

- playing of a piece of music. As an accurate description of the instruments involved and the style of the piece should be included, aswell as the emotional or physical effect of the music. The context in which the music was played and events ensuing the music piece, where possible and applicable should also be documented.

- attendance of an concert or performance of music. Again as an accurate description of the context of the concert (it's venue), the performers, style of music and any events surrounding the concert.

- whilst not explicitly concerning dreamt of recordings, as part of the project, we will also be exploring the concept of "Dream Soundtracking". This will entail scoring conceptual soundtracks based on dreams of a particularly episodic or mythic nature. In this respect we would be interested in detailed transcriptions of such dreams. Valid examples would include dreams that involve "past life regression scenarios" ; "futuristic Burroughsian societies/time travel" ; "Lovecraftian Mythos" ; "succubal nightmares"; "ghost stories" ; "interplanetary struggles/alien abductions"; "apocalyptic scenarios" ; "involvement in historic World events (eg: crucifixion of Christ; assassination of JFK)"; "involvement in grand conspiracies"; "portrayal of characters in celebrated book or film"; "occult initiation/ witnessing of profane rites". For this category we will only accept exceptionally lucid and coherent synopses. Dreams involving personal anxieties (such as exam failure, public nudity) will not be accepted as valid material in this category.

On receipt and subsequent validation by our team of experts, Queasy Listening will then commission an artist under it's umbrella to provide you with a personal CD recording based on the dream, along with full artwork. The recording will also be added to our archive for distribution. In addition, if you, the dream provider, considers themselves of sufficient musical bent , then Queasy Listening will reciprocate any dream you provide with a suitable dream transcript from our repository, for you to record your interpretation of that dream. The results of your interpretation, once received, will be included on the finished product, together with your commissioned piece.
